Production Process in La Famiglia Babulin
01 – Development
Each episode began with a storybook text and a pre-recorded audio book as voice over. For this reason, it was not possible to stray far from the original text when adapting LFB for the screen, and often creative solutions had to be found to keep the action flowing.
The options for approaching each episode were discussed in a meeting in the core team, then our consolidated input was used to create a storyboard.
In the next stage the audio file is edited, trimmed and sections are swapped to create a useable voice over for the screen.
With the audio edit and the storyboard, the animatic would be created which would be further refine the audio edit. This would then serve as a guide for all members of the creative team.
02 – Production
The character animation makes up the greatest majority of the motion work and is the most complex and time consuming. For this reason, it would be the first task to complete.
The characters in LFB are drawn by hand with a Cintiq, often drawn newly for each scene.
The first stage would be the key poses, which when completed would go to the client for approval.
In the next stages, the inbetweens are completed, the final line artwork is drawn for each frame, and then the characters are coloured and also textured if necessary.
After the character animation is complete, all left over motion design is begun, for example moving objects, camera moves with 3D parallax, etc.
03 – Post Production
Once the animation is complete, it is time to composite all the elements together.
After receiving the completed backgrounds, they are combined with the animation in After Effects. Any remaining textures of clothes and shadows are also completed.
This is followed by lighting and special effects like weather or particles.
Finally, an overall grade can be made and the master file rendered.
Once the final audio mixes are received from music and sound team, the five render projects can be prepared for the individual Rumantsch idioms.
After a little fiddling with the lip sync in the new idioms, to make sure that the image does not stray too far from the voice, another episode of LFB is ready to render and deliver.
